This section on Kata/forms is great for discussion. However, I thought I would like to see how often you practice kata/forms. Because it gives a clearer understanding to those who read this on your intentions, clarity and understanding of what forms/kata are all about.

Does mentally going through the kata count? Because then I do kata everyday....
But if we are talking about physically doing kata.. that's different. I answered the poll with the physical amount of time that I do kata in class. Well.. actually.. I train with kata about 4 times a week.. but there was nothing on the poll choices for that amount. It would average out to once every 2 days physically.

I am talking about the physical act of doing the form or kata.

PS: although that is good practice too.

Good poll Tim. Glad to see you're into the swing of things on this forum.
I clicked once or twice a week. But in actuality, it is more often as we try to integrate even drills into the kata framework. So while we sometimes don't do the kata, we're practicing stuff from the kata, if you know what I mean. But 1-2 a week is an alright answer. BTW - you should change your options ... they don't work v well sequentially.

I do kata everyday, although sometimes only pieces of it. Like while I'm sitting at my desk, sometimes I do kata from the waist up. >.>
But almost everyday I do some form work. Closer to everyday than once or twice a week

Closer to everyday than once or twice a week Bill I do this a lot prior to competition. It keeps my instincts sharp as well. It also helps think of power generation, when I a sitting at my desk at work. Tim

I am thinking of designing katas for wheelchair personnel. Those confined to a wheelchair. Any Ideas.

I practice the Taolu or forms everyday even if it is only a "walk through" of the forms. They enhance energy (Chi-Kung/Qi-Gong) and teach so much about Jing, Qi and Shen.
I also visualise running through the forms and discover aspects at a deeper level every day!

Kata I feel needs to be done at least three times a week, but really needs to be done every day. I like to break down internal & External (The internal forms then the External).

Taolu really need to be done every day to be internailsed and understood. They contain so many lesson that to relegate them to once or twice a week or practice is to dismiss them ans the lessons they have to teach.

Sifu Ron, I have found that I need to balance the demands of my karate training with the demands of my mothering, life, and relationships. I have learned that I can do an average of 50+ hours per month of training at a dojo, and an extra 12-15 hours approximately of home practice, and still manage to get my housework done, and my 7 children fed, hugged, listened to, disciplined, and cared for.
Karate is always with me, but doing kata is more sporadic right now. The lessons that are held in kata will not be revealed to me as quickly as if I trained in kata daily.. but I can only listen with half an ear.

Yes I agree, one has to seek a balance in their lives ... martial arts are just a part of it all. Great to hear from someone that realises this!

I do them everyday. Not always at full speed. I train full speed 3 times a week. During class when there are classes(no summer classes here) and at home on the weekend. The other days, I simply do the movement. Slow speed. Real slow speed. Just doing them and focusing on techniques or feet placement. Timing too. Doing them slowy, I realize that I chamber my fists too late. It really helps. Everyday, Seisan's in me. I do it everyday and again and again. Each day on my lunch time at home I revise those kata. It helps a lot. Keeps the memory fresh and forces me to think about what I'm doing.

"Have you hit anyone with the kata yet?" Actually, I've only hit a table with it. And a wall. Thankfully.
