This is a wicked post thread reading all of the comparisons od TKD with Karate. It makes my heart sing. I have been practicing the shotokan and ITF or Chang han kata since i first began in the arts 25 years ago. the first set of Kata that I learned where the pinan in the Kyokushin-kai system. Pinan if i understand correctly is the Okinawan name pre-dating the names for the kata given by Funakoshi, Heian. At that time Heian # 2 was actually practised as Pinan # 1, and visa-versa. Shotokan changed the order because they thought that Pinan # 1 was too hard to start with for beginners. Needless to say I have done these Japanese/Okinawan Kata for a while and then I began my Ch'ang Han journey. Instantly I began seeing the similarities in the forms, other than chon Ji. Mainly because Chon Ji moves on a "+" axis and most of the other forms utilize the more common "I" or "H" form. The first day i tried Dan Gun I immediately asked my Sabumnim if I can show him the Karate kata that was similar, he said sure and I proceeded to display Heian Nidan. He was amazed at the simmilarities as I stopped at various points and showed him spots that where similar to other forms such as Toi Gye. So I have had alot of enjoyment over the years practising both sets of forms. At one time I even taught my syllabus using both the Karate kata and the TKD hyung. That was fun. Keep the cool info coming gang. cheers Tim

This is a wicked post thread reading all of the comparisons od TKD with Karate. I'm really enjoying my continued study into the martial arts. Would I have enjoyed it as much when I was younger? I'm not too sure. Yeah, looking at how martial arts evolve or how they share a similar heritage is really interesting. Something that's keeping me going is the question of what 'style' we are doing. What does this 'style' want practitioners to do. Or maybe the question should be what do practitioners want out of their 'style'. :-) It's great, isn't it? Colin
