Here it is Feb 7 and the resolution is holding strong - I hope everybody else is doing well with theirs. The past month has been interesting in that I am amazed at how quickly this ol' body adapts, I expected it to take a lot longer and be a lot more painful to get into any kind of shape at all. On the contrary, in a little less than a month, I've gone from 10 minutes on the elliptical with no resistance to 25 minutes in hill plus at level 5 and then 15 minutes on the bike with resistance as my warmup. I am enjoying the feeling and find myself having to tone it all down to keep from becoming some kinda workout nut Karate is getting easier, too. I nearly passed out the first time back, but this last time I made it through without too much heavy breathing. I'm hoping to truly be in better shape come summer, but these are some encouraging early results. I'm convinced that a couple of days a week and one of the weekend days is optimum for exercise - basically every other day. Giving the body a day between seems to speed the development process - both from a martial arts and fitness perspective. I'm curious what y'all think - how many workouts a week works for you? Will

I'm curious what y'all think - how many workouts a week works for you? Will Hi again, I find that during the season of karate, I train about 3 4 times a week. Sometimes 7, never less than 3. When training each day or so, I try to focus on different groups each day. Abs each day or so. Kata, I try to do them all each day, but keeping up with that routine is somewhat hard. Having a definite time (9pm to 10pm) for daily trainings helped. I train in the morning on weekends Summer (off time), I train about 3 times a week. Tuesday, Thursday, and saturday. Which (strangely) coincides with class days... In the summer, I run every two days. Or bike, depending on if I'm alone or not. Alone, run, not alone (with lovely gf), bike. She tags alons for runs once in a while. But not that often. Cheers

Woot! I've kept my resolution, and now I'm down 18 pounds total.
I train as often as my schedule allows.. some times it is every day of the week, and sometimes I miss a couple of days. I personally think that once every two days would be optimal.

What? I thought these New Years resolutions were meant for breakage. I am amazed at how everybody's kept on track. Here it is the end of March and no slacking. Marvelous!
I've been building up stamina - tell me, does it translate into reserves at some point or am I gonna fall apart with the first cold I get?

To my knowledge, exercise helps strengthen the immune system... so you should have less of a chance of catching a cold. (As long as you are training wisely.. it is possible to overtrain oneself, and then overstress the body.)

Here it's been a couple more months - how's everyone doing? I've been able to keep it up. I've had a cold and lived through it - sure enough, endurance translates into reserves after all. I've lost a total of 25 pounds since Jan. and I'm enjoying Karate more with every passing week. I've got a long way to go, but I've come a long way too. When I started in January, I could hardly make it through a class without passing out. In February, it was marginally better and I was going to the gym, too. In February, I started with 10 minutes on the elliptical with no resistance and that got my hear pumping at 180+. Now, I run 2-4 miles on the track on my 'off' days. When I go to the gym I try to do 120 situps, 30-45 minutes on the treadmill at 6 mph and .5 incline, 15 minutes of bike - level7, and weights. Karate - still hard, but I'm not needing to take breaks and I'm keeping up with everyone. Technique is slow to return, though... Gotta keep working. Maybe I'll be a green belt soon, after all Will

Colin During my two formal sessions I get a clear 30 minute fairly hard workout. This is in addition to all other drills and exercises that make up the two hours in total. Aside from that I work out 2-3 times beyond that a week - combo of weights, cardiovascular/plyometrics, and martial arts drills. I actually screwed up my back for a few months, gained 4-5 kilos and couldn't get rid of it. Then about 5 weeks ago I had gastro. Was doubled up in bed for three days. Lost the 4-5 kilos (plus muscle) but also resolved my back problem! YEAH!!!! Getting back into shape is slow, but I'm taking it easy during the winter months. Colin

Hi Will.. thanks for bringing this thread back to my attention.
I can happily state that I've lost a total of 28 lbs to this date. I am now officially considered a female lightweight. Ooo.. that's cool. I've never been a lightweight before.
It's hard to lower my sugar input. I've given it a good attempt, but I'm still addicted to that sweetness. I've managed to bring down my consumption of Pop drinks. I only allow myself one glass of that per week on Saturday. I've tried to reach for fruit over candy, and lower the amount of sugar in my tea to only 1 tsp.
I'm still struggling to lose more weight hoping to get another 12 lbs off by Christmas.
Congratulations on your successes throughout this year, Will. Keep up the good work!
Gee Colin, I'm sad to hear that your health went so sour for that while, but it's nice to hear that things are coming around.

Mir,
That's awesome. I'd like to lose another 25, but it's definitely slowing down. If I can lose another 15, that would still be great - by Christmas would be stellar.
Congrats on yours too, keep it up.
Will

Uh, can I just begin by saying how sorry I am for your tragic circumstance Anything below 32 celcius (90 Fahrenheit) and I get the chills. I am SOOO thankful that it's starting to warm up here in Texas! www.usatoday.com/weather/news/2007-06-21-summer-heat_N.htm?csp=34As for the 'Getting back into shape is slow' bit, hmm, somehow I think our ideas of 'into shape' might not align - I'm pretty sure you're in fine shape, Colin!
