Hello all... I want to share a brief overview of what the NEW E.C.I. SIKAL workshop entailed.
At first i wasn't sure if I was going to make it myself or not... I managed to have a flat tire while enroute to NEW CASTLE.. Why does it always seem that stuff happens when you really are hard pressed for time and are going somewhere!?!?
Anywway, a quick overview;
well they started at 1pm working on foot work...
1.) We worked a forward, and rear step and slide movement... 2.) Next we worked the FEMALE Triangle -V- moving at a 45 degree angle off the line of an attack. 3.) we worked the lead jab and then added the cross. " as we worked the lead jab and cross we worked it with the footwork in mind. 4.) As we worked jab/Cross we then added the hook punch.. In FMA we our empty hand Panantukan or pagamut. It is slightly different from the "western boxing" mentality however it does resemble it in the same essence.
As we worked these drills commonly on focus mits and on our partners we worked it up to or against a commited attack..
As Guru Mike then spent a few moments explaining and lecturing about some of the reasons why Filipino Martial Arts do things a bit differently other then the wester or other orient arts of the asian cultures we all listened dilegently and patiently.
Then it was time to move in to with the actual weapons part of the curriculum.
KALI we worked sinawalli (double sticks-meaning to WEAVE)
1.) We started with HEAVEN the very first movement of the sinawalli drills. Most Sinawalli is 6 standard strikes 3 on each side.. We move by adding footwork also into this heaven pattern.
2.) Then we began with EARTH. Eearth is the middle area of the same 6 pattern.
3.) Then playing with these 2 we added the "STANDARD or LOWER 6" pattern.. and then combined all three together. This was pretty much it for the basic sinawalli drills.
We then went into the BASIC 5 (general) angles of strikes.. again working mainly with the "stick" but later showed how versitile the 5 angles are while using a stick, knife, empty hand and you only learn them and everything else is a valuable and emplimental tool for a weapon.
After this we finished up the lesson with a general disarm, which i call the "inverted thumb base strip" it's a disarm where u turn the weapon with the point facing downward and use your forearm to strip the weapon from the hand... its a pretty neat release.. not a very reliable one.. but pretty cool..
well for all that missed it.. im sorry and i hope that if any of you can look forward to participating in the next one it will be the 3rd Sat of FEB and will be held in MUNCIE, IN. at the Northwest YMCA APPLETREE center.. With Sensei J. Dotson and myself as the host.
Oh and BTW GO COLTS!!! ; )
