sounds ambitious. My last teacher taught a modified Tai Chi form to a disabled group as part of their therapy, but I think the best we had was a blind man, nobody in a wheel chair. I would say some, but others are not distinct enough in the hand movements from others. I don't know what else to say.. Bill

Maybe they shouldn't be doing kata at all? Maybe drills based on their ability?
Guess who voted 'no'?

You are a systematic person with the arts. I am trying to spread the wealth a little. Trying new things is what it is all about. In the 70's and 80's There use to be a Karate Master who was published all the time about his courses for the handicap. He developed a system up to 4th Dan if I am not mistaken. However, I have not found any of that material lately, so I guess I will have to wing it. Tim

Maybe you should come up with a requirements list and then match them with things you can provide? As for kata ... it's there to teach them lessons. Can those lessons be taught without physically performing the kata? I think they can. It'll take some explanation, but with complementary drills, watching and then interpreting kata ... they could actually learn some good skills without having to 'fit' into the mold of a more able bodied person. I'm not against a handicapped person learning kata at all ...

There exists a karate Sensei who has always been in a wheelchair. He probably has already adapted kata to his condition.
Perhaps he could give you suggestions, and input. He is active on the internet... so might be easy to reach.
I will find out his name, and post it here as soon as possible.

I will find out his name, and post it here as soon as possible. His name is: Timothy J. Schutte After having some second thoughts I have removed Sensei Tim's email address here. It is still a public forum, and I feel that it is wrong to post the email address out like that. If you wish to contact Sensei Tim you can do so by clicking on the link on his karate page to his personal home page, and leaving a message. He is a paraplegic, and has practiced/taught Isshinryu for 38+ years, taijiquan for 2 years. You can visit his karate page at: www.geocities.com/kc8hr/karate.html

Wow Mir, you're just full of surprises! That's pretty cool. I like the fact that he was able to train even though he had no money.

Mir - would you like to invite him here? A bit presumptious of me, but if Tim is leading something to benefit handicapped students and it's related to the topic of this forum, why not? Colin

Sifu White! I also found this resource on the internet: www.fightingarts.com/reading/get_articles.php?cat=Martial%20Arts%20and%20the%20DisabledThe majority of the articles are written by Ronald van de Sandt. He does a 4 articles showing various self defense moves for the disabled in a wheelchair. (includes some nice pictures to illustrate!) There is also an article by Renshi Wendi Dragonfire, Shuri-Ryu Karate-Do on how to teach the disabled. The article that I found wonderfully inspiring was the last one on the list about Sempai Kevin, a black belt who has suffered from Cerebral Palsy from birth written by Sensei Christopher Caile.
